Earlier today I caught a glimpse of an 8 minute clip from the new Mortal Kombat project. It wasn't confirmed yet as to whether or not it was a trailer for a new video game, or they would be offering a new MK movie. If you've seen the previous two Mortal Kombat films, they weren't terrible, but they could have been a lot better. Based on this Mortal Kombat Rebirth preview clip, I'd say it does the series justice.

In fact it gives Mortal Kombat more of a dark, gritty and grimy feel to it. The preview shows Michael Jae White as Jackson Briggs, a police detective investigating a series of brutal murders. He has a suspect in custody, who ends up being a popular character from the original Mortal Kombat video game, Scorpion. He briefs him on these serial killers, who are other MK characters, and asks Scorpion to go enter an underworld fighting tournament to "finish them all".
I was rather impressed with this new Mortal Kombat Rebirth preview. I can still remember the hysteria surrounding the original Mortal Kombat video game and busting out the Sega Genesis back in college. Scorpion was my favorite, as well as Baraka in the follow-up game. According to ComingSoon.net, there's no guarantee that this movie will actually happen or that it will contain any of what's seen in this short viral video clip that surfaced just today:
The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, andfeatures a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall. Based on the way the clips look, it will be more violent, dark and use better special effects treatment on the various villains involved in the Mortal Kombat games. Two in particular are featured in this clip, Reptile and Baraka. If you've played the video games, you know these guys well, but be warned they look a lot scarier on the new movie footage than their video game selves!
Here's the Mortal Kombat Rebirth video preview from the movie on YouTube. Enjoy, but also watch at your own risk, it does contain a few gruesome scenes.
