A strange red
the UK press does a better job reporting truth
Because they don't Steve. The IPCC is not a science org. It is a political org. It never won a Nobel Science Prize and never will. It's so-called science is on par with Intelligent Design. The real scientific community knows this. That is why Al Gore and the IPCC won the Peace Prize rather than any Science prize.
I think it is difficult to meld opinions coming from different realms together.
Folks distrust "science" maybe because they think it is just "business". In many cases, it is.
The IPCC is just as credible as any other human organization.
IPCC Organization.
But what I actually stated (try reading for comprehension) is that every major scientific organization in the world endorses the IPCC Reports.
"The real scientific community knows this."
You mean the real "free-market think tanks", like CATO, AEI, Heartland, Fraser, etc., etc., etc., funded by the likes of Exxon. Phillip Morris had its scientists, too, you know.
Speaking of Al Gore, you should read his latest book, Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis. His solutions to climate change are also economic solutions and great approaches to national security. I doubt even you could disagree with his proposed solutions - unless you have a great deal of fossil stocks.
Folks don't understand that no major scientific organization in the world disputes the IPCC Reports. Most folks don't even know what the IPCC is. Gary, above, is a case in point.
"The IPCC is just as credible as any other human organization."
Would you think that the American Medical Association might know a bit more about medicine than other "human organizations"?
thanks for sharing this.
It proves that denialists use the same logic. Or illogic.
Many scientists are predicting an ice age over the next 50 years.
No, they aren't. The next ice age isn't likely to happen for 20,000 years (assuming we don't mess things up before then). But how about a link to the "many scientists?" Any not linked to the Heartland Institute?
Even REALCLIMATE, a pro-AGW blog predicts cooling.
Nope. In fact, RealClimate has spent much time debunking the global cooling myths that denialists like to scream about. Of course, the only way denialists can show cooling is to cherry picking and lie about the data.
Bill Mahr is funny but he puts up straw men.
As opposed to just make stuff up like "many scientists are predicting an ice ages over the next 50 years" and "REALCLIMATE...predicts cooling?"
How sad.
Straw men? That's another one of those cliche's I've never really understood the meaning behind - or care to.
"Industry desperately wants to push this off onto future generations because it will cut into their profits NOW. Unfortunately, a lot of voters agree with them when they are told that it will cost them in higher energy prices. One of the "joys" of Democratic government is that everybody has his/her hand out, but nobody wants their ox gored.
That is where political leadership is needed...to convince people that sacrifice is needed for worthwhile goals. Kennedy was the last President that I can recall who had the ability to inspire people. Jimmy Carter tried hard to address this problem over thirty years ago, but ultimately failed when Reagan torpedoed all his alternate energy programs.
Sadly, Obama has not shown the kind of leadership we need so far. However, he is facing a well-funded and organized industry effort to deny and obfuscate scientific findings on climate change. I don't think Carter faced such an implacable foe for his programs."
Bert, I heard Chris Matthews is it? Hardball, last night and he said BP, the FOURTH LARGEST CORPORATION IN THE WORLD. They have been 'paying off' politicians since Winston Churchill in 1925!
LOL! Yeah they somehow made the Copenhagen summit a non-event. Those rascals! Seriously, alarmists will stop at nothing to keep AGW alive. They are so desperate, they hired top scientist Bill Maher to replace top scientist Al Gore!
Yes, Sheryl, any idiot can believe we are hurting the environment. It takes only a few brain cells. However, it takes a few more brain cells to recognize that carbon dioxide is good for plants and is actually GREEN rather than anti-green as top scientists Bill Maher and Al Gore would have us believe. Oh...wait...Maher and Gore are not scientists...not enough brain cells.

Methane bubbles trapped in lake ice in Siberia in early autumn.
Methane trapped in a special type of permafrost is bubbling up at rate five times faster than originally measured, according to a study in the Thursday, Sept. 6, 2006, issue of the journal Nature.

WASHINGTON — Global warming gases trapped in the soil are bubbling out of the thawing permafrost in amounts far higher than previously thought and may trigger what researchers warn is a climate time bomb.
Methane — a greenhouse gas 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide — is being released from the permafrost at a rate five times faster than thought, according to a study being published today in the journal Nature. The findings are based on new, more accurate measuring techniques.
“The effects can be huge,” said lead author Katey Walter of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks said. “It’s coming out a lot and there’s a lot more to come out.”
Scientists worry about a global warming vicious cycle that was not part of their already gloomy climate forecast: Warming already under way thaws permafrost, soil that has been continuously frozen for thousands of years. Thawed permafrost releases methane and carbon dioxide. Those gases reach the atmosphere and help trap heat on Earth in the greenhouse effect. The trapped heat thaws more permafrost and so on.
“The higher the temperature gets, the more permafrost we melt, the more tendency it is to become a more vicious cycle,” said Chris Field, director of global ecology at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, who was not part of the study. “That’s the thing that is scary about this whole thing. There are lots of mechanisms that tend to be self-perpetuating and relatively few that tend to shut it off.”
Some scientists say this vicious cycle is already under way, but others disagree.
Most of the methane-releasing permafrost is in Siberia. Another study earlier this summer in the journal Science found that the amount of carbon trapped in this type of permafrost — called yedoma — is much more prevalent than originally thought and may be 100 times the amount of carbon released into the air each year by the burning of fossil fuels.

Science
It won’t all come out at once or even over several decades, but if temperatures increase, then the methane and carbon dioxide will escape the soil, scientists say.
The permafrost issue has caused a quiet buzz of concern among climate scientists and geologists. Specialists in Arctic climate are coming up with research plans to study the permafrost effect, which is not well understood or observed, said Robert Corell, chairman of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, a study group of 300 scientists.
“It’s kind of like a slow-motion time bomb,” said Ted Schuur, a professor of ecosystem ecology at the University of Florida and co-author of the study in Science.
Most of the yedoma is in little-studied areas of northern and eastern Siberia. What makes that permafrost special is that much of it lies under lakes; the carbon below gets released as methane. Carbon beneath dry permafrost is released as carbon dioxide.
Using special underwater bubble traps, Walter and her colleagues found giant hot spots of bubbling methane that were never measured before because they were hard to reach.
“I don’t think it can be easily stopped; we’d really have to have major cooling for it to stop,” Walter said.
Scientists aren’t quite sure whether methane or carbon dioxide is worse. Methane is far more powerful in trapping heat, but only lasts about a decade before it dissipates into carbon dioxide and other chemicals. Carbon dioxide traps heat for about a century.
“The bottom line is it’s better if it stays frozen in the ground,” Schuur said. “But we’re getting to the point where it’s going more and more into the atmosphere.”
Vladimir Romanovsky, geophysics professor at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, said he thinks the big methane or carbon dioxide release hasn’t started yet, but it’s coming. In Alaska and Canada — which have far less permafrost than Siberia — it’s closer to happening, he said. Already, the Alaskan permafrost is reaching the thawing point in many areas.
Link? I have never heard of this.

Which scientists? Climate-gate scientists?

Always a time bomb, never just a sunny warm day. These people have been crying wolf for years.

So hook up a pipeline and use it for power, idiots!
“The effects can be huge,” said lead author Katey Walter of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks said. “It’s coming out a lot and there’s a lot more to come out.”
Wow, they discovered a source of natural gas! Maybe they will discover it can be used to heat homes during the winter.
Scientists worry about a global warming vicious cycle that was not part of their already gloomy climate forecast: Warming already under way thaws permafrost, soil that has been continuously frozen for thousands of years.
Wahahahahahah! Mommy! I'm scared!
Thawed permafrost releases methane and carbon dioxide. Those gases reach the atmosphere and help trap heat on Earth in the greenhouse effect. The trapped heat thaws more permafrost and so on.
And a candle can heat a swimming pool. LOL! The greenhouse effect does not work without the sun's energy and the sun is dimming, an ice age is coming.
“The higher the temperature gets, the more permafrost we melt, the more tendency it is to become a more vicious cycle,” said Chris Field, director of global ecology at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, who was not part of the study.
Since these guys love to speculate, why stop there? Why not add: the Earth will become so warm, the magma below the surface will explode through cracks in the surface and wipe out every man, woman and child along with every polar bear cub.
“That’s the thing that is scary about this whole thing. There are lots of mechanisms that tend to be self-perpetuating and relatively few that tend to shut it off.”
It is a wonder why past warming trends that have happened many times over millions of years did not cause previous disasters. Oh wait...this is junk science. That explains why.
Some scientists say this vicious cycle is already under way, but others disagree.
What? There are denier scientists? But Bill Maher says only stupid people deny or disagree with AGW alarmist scientists. Could he be full of sh*t?
Most of the methane-releasing permafrost is in Siberia.
Those poor Siberians. They will have warmer weather and a greener landscape.
Another study earlier this summer in the journal Science found that the amount of carbon trapped in this type of permafrost — called yedoma — is much more prevalent than originally thought and may be 100 times the amount of carbon released into the air each year by the burning of fossil fuels. You mean a natural source beats out manmade sources? But the IPCC said humans are mostly responsible for global warming. Looks like they are wrong.
It won’t all come out at once or even over several decades, but if temperatures increase, then the methane and carbon dioxide will escape the soil, scientists say.
In other words, go back to bed; there is nothing to see here.

Well at least they admit they lack understanding.

Oh, so now it is a slow-motion time bomb. LOL!
Scientists aren’t quite sure whether methane or carbon dioxide is worse.
In other words they're ignorant.
Methane is far more powerful in trapping heat, but only lasts about a decade before it dissipates into carbon dioxide and other chemicals. Carbon dioxide traps heat for about a century.
So flip a coin.
“The bottom line is it’s better if it stays frozen in the ground,” Schuur said.
Assuming the release wouldn't be good for plant life, but plants love carbon dioxide.
“But we’re getting to the point where it’s going more and more into the atmosphere.”

So pump it out and use it to power your homes ya big kanook!
Thanks for the idea, Gary - the FakeGates!
By the way, Gary, thanks for making it abundantly clear (if it wasn't already) that no one can take anything you say seriously.
I am really impressed. You have really studied this issue and you are a real expert. You and Roy Spencer have showed us all how most scientists who have made their life's work studying the world's climate are just stupid yahoos or else they are lying...or maybe both.
We really owe you and Roy a big thank you for exposing all those evil scientists.
Oh, and Roy also thinks all those biologists and biochemists clear back to Darwin are doing the same thing on this stupid idea of evolution. It's very clear that God designed everything. What idiots!
Thanks again for clearing all this up for us, Gary. The world really needs smart and honest people like you and Roy.
Let's just say I am more of an expert than Bill Maher.
You and Roy Spencer have showed us all how most scientists who have made their life's work studying the world's climate are just stupid yahoos or else they are lying...or maybe both.
Nah, Bert, the climate-gate emails do a much better job of exposing those stupid lying yahoos. Read Sex, Lies, and Climate-gate
We really owe you and Roy a big thank you for exposing all those evil scientists.
Nah, you should thank your own favorite scientists for exposing themselves.
Oh, and Roy also thinks all those biologists and biochemists clear back to Darwin are doing the same thing on this stupid idea of evolution. It's very clear that God designed everything. What idiots!
Well Roy Spencer reminds me of you, Bert. He has his religious-science and you have yours: AGW. What do AGW and ID have in common? They both like to conflate idiology and science, and neither is falsifiable--no amount of contrary evidence will convince you, Roy or any true believer that your chosen beliefs aren't true.
Thanks again for clearing all this up for us, Gary. The world really needs smart and honest people like you and Roy.
Again, don't thank me. Thank Dr. Phil Jones for admitting that there hasn't been any significant warming for the past 15 years (you can Google this). Thank Michael Mann for his lies and his hockey stick scandal (you can Google this too). Finally, thank Dr. Kevin Trenberth for asking, "Where is global warming?" (You can Google it all.)
Bert, I have a question for you? If you are going to believe in AGW without question, why not believe in God? Or the tooth fairy? Maybe you should scrutinize AGW as much as you do ID. I know I do. The truth is fine with me!
Because there is scientific evidence to support AGW, Gary. You deny it, but it's a fact. Some people argue with it, and it's not a slam dunk. There is legitimate disagreement. Some of it is clearly motivated by the energy industry. You deny that too, while claiming that only the scientists are corrupt.
You seem to be the one with a religious view on this, Gary.
My position is not unlike my position on evolution. There is much evidence to support it, but there are still gaps and uncertainties. We don't have the full picture yet.
The difference in the case of global warming is that it has dire consequences if we get it wrong. In the case of evolution, science can take its time accumulating the evidence. Besides, it's fun to watch the Creationists squirm as they are backed into an ever-narrowing corner.
It is a classic case of tunnel vision...listening only to those you agree with, even if the rest of the world disagrees. It's so similar to religious belief. In this case, the dirty energy companies have unlimited funds to pay rogue scientists to spout their garbage. It's not surprising...but it is saddening...that a few of them can't turn down the money.
Is it possible that they are wrong? Yes. But the burden of proof is on the deniers, who I think even you will admit are in the minority.
Lindzen is the only one you mentioned who has done any climate research.
Watts is an ex-TV weatherman who sells weather gadgets (no climate research; funded by Heartland)
Monckton is a British peer with no science training at all, and a habit of making stuff up. In fact, he's a poser. You know what that is.
Singer is an engineer who shills for whomever is paying the bills. He claimed smoking doesn't cause cancer (it does), CFCs had nothing to do with the ozone hole (they do), the Martian moon Phobos is artificial and hollow (it is neither), etc.
All are associated with the Heartland Institute and other non-science free market lobbying groups whose missions are to protect their corporate members from any regulation.
By contrast the IPCC won the Nobel Peace Prize, not the Nobel Science prize!
Because 1) climate science is multidisciplinary, and 2) the impact on the planet is so far-reaching as to put our very future on a fulcrum. They received the peace award for contributing to world knowledge and awareness.
Not that everyone is open to knowledge that goes against their predetermined narrative.
Al Gore is not a scientist,
And he never said he was. He shared the peace prize, remember. He made a movie. Get over it.
Who is Mr. Potato Head? Why it is you! The Brits get it! You don't!
Proving yet again that you treat knowledge like a joke. And that absolutely nothing you say can ever be taken seriously. Especially when you try to fake it. Which is, well, always.
AGW is not science,
AGW is the result of more than 200 years of basic physics and research, tens of thousands of peer-reviewed articles by thousands of researchers all over the world. It is the result of gaining knowledge. Which some people actually seek (while others seem to avoid).
it is a religious cult like astrology and Intelligent Design!
Cue the "its a religion" talking point. BTW, did you know that one of the most oft cited climate skeptics, Dr. Roy Spencer, is a devout believer that Intelligent Design is a science? That ought to tell you something.
The Truth About Global Warming
Versus, what the denialists offer:
Exposing Climate Denialism - A Guide to Tactics and Tall Tales
How typical. Create a fabrication totally unrelated to anything that I said, and make believe that I said it. That is why no one takes you seriously. You make stuff up.
But since you are into who slept with who, read Sex, Lies and Climate-gate.
Perfect example of more fiction. In fact, that's all you write, only you make believe it isn't fiction.
Perhaps you missed the various investigations spurred on by denialist propaganda and harassment, all of which completely exonerated all the scientists being accused. And all the investigations agreed that the denialists had fabricated, misrepresented, misinformed and outright lied about what was in the emails.
Must feel proud to be part of that elite group of non-science free market lobbyists, their front groups, and their ideological lackeys.
LOL! How do you know he is really sticking up for the truth seekers? Have you heard of climate-gate or the hockeystick scandal? Try Googling these. Read the climate-gate emails. Find out the truth for yourself. None of us need to take Bill-the idiot's word for anything!
Climategate = FakeGate (contrived by denialists cherry picking a handful of out of context emails out of more than 1000 emails stolen and writing fiction about them; scientists completely exonerated; denialists proven to be liars)
Hockey Stick = Reaffirmed by US National Academy of Sciences; strengthened with a whole team of hockey stick data all showing the same thing
Continued lying about both by the denialists = priceless
The Truth About Global Warming
Gary, I don't know if you'll care for this comment, or not, but I want you to know that I do mean this as a compliment when I say this. I have always noticed that both you and Bill Maher are two of the wittiest people I've come across, and I've always thought your styles of delivery of your opinions, ideas, and musings are strikingly similar.
I'd really like people like you and Bill Maher to weigh-in much more often on the dialouge concerning many a topic, than most I've witnessed.
I toast you and Bill Maher. Brilliant individuals who can easily cut through much serious crap, delivered up by people from all sides of most any issue, all of which, hold much too much sway over our lives. May their be many more like, G.M. Jackson, and Bill Maher.
I
Georgiana, you deserve a round of applause for the way you have hosted this thread, letting people verbally duke out their differences while you remain essentially above the fray, only injecting the occasional pithy and relevant comment. Well done. Cheers!
