Bernie Madoff: Still Unrepentant

A new Time story out says that Bernard "Bernie" Madoff is still "cocky and unrepentant" even behind bars. This comes from a new profile in New York that takes a look at the now incarcerated former financier who bilked his clients out of $65+ billion.

Apparently, Madoff has made friends in prison and become a bit of a celebrity amongst inmates. Being locked up doesn't seem to be bringing him down, and he certainly doesn't seem to have changed his attitude. In fact, an inmate quotes Madoff as saying, "F*** my victims. I carried them for 20 years, and now I'm doing 150 years."

It seems that the 72-year old Madoff hasn't had a change of heart in prison. Or, perhaps, it would be more accurate to say that his heart, if present, still seems to be made of stone.

I suppose that Madoff is a good example of the fact that wisdom does not necessarily come with age. It certainly seems to have missed him, as did any of the moral lessons that should have been derived from his Jewish upbringing.

Madoff is safer in jail, in my opinion. There are a lot of little old ladies (me included) who would happily rip that smirk off his face. My retirement didn't disappear, but it took a serious hit when my university unwisely invested with him. I wish the man *would* live another 150 years ... so he'd have longer to regret his actions. :\

Sadly, I'm not certain he would see the error of his ways even in another 150 years.

He ruined many people's lives and it is sad that even in jail he has no concept of the cruelty of what he did. So many people think it's okay to rob the "rich" but he robbed the poor too. No one deserved what he did. He has no heart and feels no accountability. He is to be pitied for his "poor" character and lack of compassion. He may be alive, but in my eyes he is a living shell, dead inside. As much as he angers people, he has no conscience and that is so sad. I don't think he even realizes his life was a waste and it's about over. Some people are so consumed with hate, they have no clue.
