Today I was very disappointed to hear that Rue McClanahan, who played Blanche Devereaux on The Golden Girls, passed away today from a stroke. She was just 76-years-old, which in my opinion is fairly young.
Remember when Lifetime used to repeat The Golden Girls about six times a day? I loved it! When I had summer vacation as a middle school and high school student, I always tuned in to watch an episode or two a day. The ladies of the show might have been older, but they had as much charisma and energy as women in their 20s and 30s. Keep in mind that Blanche was Samantha before there was ever Sex and the City!
Each member of the ensemble cast brought something special to the mix. Though I don't have a favorite on the show, Blanche was one of the ladies a lot of younger women such as myself could feel a connection to. Rue McClanahan has passed away, but her memory will forever live through her character on the show.
I'm hoping Lifetime shows a Golden Girls marathon this weekend! I'd say we're all overdue for one.
