Facebook, Your Phone Number, and Evil

Tom Scott has an interesting way of reminding people that its important to take online security seriously. He has written an API that posts phone numbers found on facebook -- with the pictures of their owners.

Facebook isn't the only website that makes accessing information about people easy. It is, however, getting a lot of press right now.

If you haven't done so, Facebook will be making the security settings easier to find. Review yours.  Look to other sites you use as well ... and sites you no longer use. The identity you save may be your own.

yes, definitely important to stay aware of this. 1 thing I do is simply limit how much personal info is out there--e.g. never put my real birthday online.

I wonder how many people really think about that -- name, address (many people would be surprised how easy it is to get address history for just about anyone online), and birth date are all that is needed for a lot of identity theft.

I don't use facebook and I doubt I ever will. Gather plus my real life leaves me needing a 48 hour clock as it is. I have so many things I want to do that I just don't have time for anything else.

I fear that if I posted my picture on Facebook that flannel shirts would become the rage of fashion driving up the price and making Oprah want me on her show. I just don't need such grief.

But some would say that causing such an uproar would be a stimulus to the economy -- just think ... you could do what the government can't?!?!?

No, I was actually quite dapper. I had a large collection of very expensive ties. I did a lot of public speaking events. Actually, I liked being on stage, but I did not like all the invitations to various parties and special private exhibitions. I never had much freedom. I just want to be left alone so I can write, enjoy supper with my wife and talk every once in a while to my true and dear friends.

I don't mind crowds, but only once or twice a year. I saw a doctor today for the first time since March 2009. My new doctor agreed I need therapy for the pain in my injured shoulder. I'm rather happy about this. Finally, I think I've found a doctor with good ethics. It is a woman. Maybe I should not mention talking fish to her.
