An observation I've made over the past ten years: women's voices have gone to crap. Watching television and movies recently, I've noticed that at least 50% of the females no longer have the voice quality or timber that they did even 20 years ago. The majority of the ones I hear on commercials or programs are what I would consider "immature". The sounds are formed at the back of the palate, rather than in the throat.
Case in point: Emily Proctor (Calleigh Duquesne on CSI: Miami). She is an extremely talented and beautiful woman, but her voice is like fingernails on a blackboard. It tells me that she never passed puberty.
I hear this same thing on commercials and also from actresses in movies.
Listen to women from the '40s and '50s and I think you'll understand what I'm saying. I wonder if there isn't something environmental these days that prevent females from having a normal voice.
