Last night on the American Idol Top 3, Lee DeWyze performed "Hallelujah", a song selection from Simon Cowell. The judges praised it and the audience went wild. Today the video of his performance became a huge hit with internet viewers. However, was it as brilliant as the judges made it out to be?
To test whether or not it was, let's compare Lee DeWyze's judge's pick performance to that of last season's winner of American Idol. No I'm not talking about Kris Allen, last year's technical winner, but rather the one the media has favored - Adam Lambert! In Season 8 during Top 3 week, the glam rocker sang "One", another pick from Simon Cowell.
Here are the two videos to compare:
Season 9: Lee DeWyze "Hallelujah"
Season 8: Adam Lambert "One"
Before watching the videos it may seem Adam Lambert has the advantage. He did get a classic U2 song. But that's also where he has the bigger challenge because he's expected to be as good as Bono, which is impossible! Adam managed to make the song his own, but unfortunately, it didn't have the special sauce that U2 brought to it. But on top of that, it sounds as if Adam was pushing his voice TOO hard. It wasn't as natural and flowing as it could have been.
Lee DeWyze's song though fit him like a glove. His rough rocker voice was an awesome balance with the chorus. It worked...simple as that.
I have to say the judges were right last night and weren't exaggerating. Lee Dewyze has a memorable and amazing performance. He's in it to win it, and whether it's Crystal or Casey who stays tonight, she or he has a lot prove for the season finale.

Overall, I would say they're about even. The difference is that One was maybe the 4th or 5th best Idol performance from Adam while Hallelujah was probably Lee's best.
