Fowler’s Modern English Usage, a great reference guide for all things related to the English language, says that the spelling rules for words ending in -RE and -ER generally differ between British and American English, respectively, but notes that "the contrast … is not totally systematic." Nowhere does this seem more obvious than with the words theater/theatre. Particularly in the U.S., the words seem to be used interchangeably.
With that in mind, consider these questions: Does this spelling variation ever create problems for you? (For example, have you had difficulty finding information on upcoming shows, tickets, or directions based on spelling?)
Do the different spellings mean different things to you at all?
Is there a spelling you prefer?
