Thursday when I went to Subway for lunch, I discovered signs saying that if you use your EBT card (food stamps), you would get a free cookie. I find that to be totally out of line! Basically, they are rewarding those people who are living on welfare instead of rewarding the hard-working Americans who pay for it!
I have no problem with those on welfare using their EBT cards to buy from fast food places because I was briefly on welfare many years ago and when you are homeless, it's hard to buy groceries. So, I'm not against them being able to use their food stamp card to buy food at places like Subway.
What I have a problem with is rewarding people for being on welfare by giving them perks for using an EBT card. People on welfare need to be encouraged to get back into the work force and be productive citizens not be encouraged to remain on welfare by such rewards.
It's hard to get off welfare. I know because I had to break the rules to do so and risk my month's welfare and food stamps to get off of welfare. The way welfare is set up, the only way to really get off is to break the rules because the rules limit what you can and cannot do to get the money and the food stamps.
I was only on welfare for four months but they had it set up so I had to go to "workfare" the first three days of each week. Don't get me wrong, I think people on welfare should be required to participate in some sort of work for the city to qualify for welfare because that way they don't just sit on their butts collecting money.
However, they need to have the workfare set up for the last half of the week not the first half because the job ads come out in the Sunday paper and if you don't call them Monday morning, you don't get the job. I definitely think the system needs to monitor those on welfare but for those who are genuinely trying to get off welfare, they should be the ones rewarded not these people who have kid after kid so they can get more money.
That's why this thing with subway annoys me so much because it's like they are rewarding people who use welfare to get out of working for a living. That is not acceptable!
I, for one, will not be eating at Subway anymore until they change this and I just emailed them to let them know that. I am a regular customer but until they start rewarding those of us who work and pay taxes to keep this country afloat instead of those who are taking advantage of this country, I don't intend to spend my hard earned money in their restaurants.
