One thing Disney has become notorious for in the decade or so is making sequels. Movies like Bambi II, The Little Mermaid III, Mulan 2, The Lion King 1 ½ the list goes on. Sequels often offer a ‘after the fact’ storyline or even a different perspective of the same movie. In its earlier days Disney made sequels (love bug movies) and The Rescuers down under.
But are Disney sequels good enough to stand up to their predecessor? Sometimes they’re considered as good and sometimes not so much. There is one Disney sequel that to me, is better than the original and that is The Rescuers Down Under. I love Down Under, but when I saw the original I didn’t like it as much (in fact I think I’ve seen it 3-4 times while the sequel countless times).
But when it comes to Disney sequels I like the freedom of not knowing what happens afterward to think for myself what happens after ‘happily ever after’. In sequels, there are sometimes plot holes that emerge, and the best example is in The Lion King II (which deserves its own write-up).
It’s nice to see favorite characters in action, but nothing beats the original for me. I guess it’s hard in some movies to get past the concept of ‘oh, so this is what happens next’. Yet, by the same account while I was watching Beauty and the Beast, I though ‘is this it?’ at the end. The Little Mermaid II is sad because you actually see Aerial and her friends go their separate ways. That’s…depressing.
I do own a fair number of sequels, but they’re just not the same. There are a couple of sequels I do really like however. The Lion King II (even though it has a few plot holes), The Rescuers Down Under, Toy Story II, Lady and the Tramp II: Scamps Adventure and Mulan II.
Do you like Disney sequels and if so what Disney sequels are your favorite?
