Can not being in a "clique" hurt or hinder your career?

What do you think about cliques in the community?  Whether it be a professional clique, a clique of parents at your child's school, or your child's cliques?

Do you think they are unhealthy? Do you feel your business needs to be part of the clique to "make it" within the professional world?

I have never considered myself as a member of any clique - despite accusations to the contrary.

I think often we put so much energy trying to be a part of the clique, that we miss out on many other great opportunities.
