Why Does It Have To Taste So Bad

I have a terrible cold, but I am not one to take medicine, except when I need to sleep. The only thing for me is Nyquil. Wonderful stuff. My question is why the heck does it have to taste so bad?? It takes me 30 minutes to get this mess down. No one can convince me they can't make it taste better. My hubby just chugs it down, but if I did that it would cop a Ueeeee and head right back up. Oh it is just awful. And on top of that now you have to sign for it because people are making meth with it. They have Nyquil on the shelves but they took out the stuff that helps me sleep because of the meth thing. So now I have to go to the pharmacy counter and ask for Nyquil D and show my I D and sign for it. Man I just want to sleep not make meth out of it.

I've wondered the same thing! Surely they could make it taste a bit better. Having to sign for so many drugs now is a pain but it does keep a lot of it out of the wrong hands. I hope you feel better soon!

Be grateful that all you have to do is sign for it. Here in Mississippi, all decongestants are now sold only by prescription. Yep, you need some Sudafed for your seasonal allergies, you gotta go to the doctor.....

Oh wow, that makes it nearly impossible for some people to get decongestants. Many people around here only go to the doctor if a limb is broken or they're having a heart attack or stroke. Most people just can't afford to see a doctor unless they are very, very ill!

Wow that just doesn't seem very fair, in Illinois you just have to show ID and sign for it.

It's medicine, it's supposed to taste bad, lol! In the past, people got addicted to that cherry cough syrup with the codeine in it...maybe it's for the best. It would be nice if they could put it in a pill...

In (parts of) Alaska where much of the state is national park territory, alcohol is strictly illegal...but Nyquil is not. It is not unusual for hunters/trappers to carry a whole case of Nyquil with them.

With its high alcohol content (14%), some enterprising bartender came up with a drink called the Green Lizard....Nyquil and SevenUp.

You poor thing. I know just how you feel. I hate that stuff, but it works, so it's what I take. My son drinks it like water, doesn't mind the taste at all. Hope you feel better soon. :)

Good morning, Diane!

A cold + 5 days coming and 7>10 days leaving and the last 3 of the first 5 and the first 5 of the 10 are contagious! So you are able to share your cold with everyone for 8 days, 3 of them before you know you even have it!


Good news: You can only catch a cold/virus that you have not already had!

Then there must be thousands of cold virus out there. I have never had the flu or a temperature in my life I have a great immune system except for colds and they just kick my butt.

I love Nyquil too but it knocks me out so well that I can not wake up in time so I do not use it anymore. I don't mind the flavor of Nyquil. I hate Robitussin and I can't stand that flavor. Don't complain about Nyquil until you've tasted Robitussin!!! Ugh, it is just awful.

I am not sure I have tried Robitussin but Nyquil is just awful. Reminds me of Yagermister alcohol mess, yuck. But it works so I shiver it down. Thanks so much Risa.

This is hilarious. Yes, for an awful cold there is nothing like Nyquil, if you can keep it down. I have had the exact same response to its revoltingness, and the liquigels don't seem to work as well. Those people who use Nyquil to make meth must be very smart. I wouldn't know where to begin (not that I want to, mind you).

Catnip is great to help you sleep and it also relieves fevers. The whole drug policy is completely crazy though -- they don't want people to make meth yet they give methamphetamine to kids (Ritalin) to make them calm! Makes no sense at all. We used to get this Prince of Peace Nature Soothe cough syrup which is really good, if you can find it. Better than taking that Nyquil alcohol junk. There's also a good Swiss cough product called Olbas, and Ricola is always good. Used to get their instant tea which I think was called Tisana? Try the herbal route but definitely don't combine it with any drugs. Thanks for posting this!

You bet! It's funny that Mom used to always be into the herbal stuff and I slowly got interested in it. Now I'm always trying to tell her to use those traditional remedies! Looks like we should also check out Linda's recipe. I made some shiitake soup the other day that was pretty good -- got some kind of "Traditional" soup from Jewel that had red rice in it. I'm still not sure what exactly that is, but it was tasty. I know the oil of oregano softgels from Solaray have really helped me with my sinus / respiratory issues. The local health food store could probably help you out too. Thanks and have a healthy week!

My son works at a health food co-op/natural grocery; they have a huge supplements room (he works stock/cashier but often winds up talking to customers on the floor--they are all required to 'know their stuff'). He is the one who figured out why my liver enzymes were high--I was putting cinnamon in my coffee every morning and the botanical species sold as cinnamon (it's not true cinnamon--the one used in the drug studies) in the United States can cause elevated liver enzymes. The only place to obtain 'true' cinnamon in its natural form is at the health food store or an Indian grocery here in town. (Of course, I could buy a bottle of pills but the staff naturopath told me it would be cheaper to buy my own and grind it myself).

I'm diabetic, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and an autoimmune thyroid disorder--not to mention early menopause (which I consider a blessing, by the way, despite the potential problems it presents). Elevated liver enzymes is a BIG deal for me.

Any of the 'sleep remedy' herbal teas that contain valerian will be most effective at helping you drop off. If you are allergic to goldenrod, be cautious using anything with echinacea as the two plants are related botanically and you can have a reaction or develop cross-sensitivities.

Chamomile is generally safe, so is catnip--both are commonly given to children in the EU. I wouldn't give valerian to a child, however, without seeing a doctor.

If it tasted better, more people would abuse it. Too much cold medicine can kill you. That awful taste helps you remember you've already taken it.

One dose of Nyquil used to make me stupid for two days. I do not take it. I guess that bad taste has something to do with it as well. I get maybe one cold a year.
