The Iranian cleric may be simplifying a very complex situation, however there is a thread of truth in what he is saying. There is a mysterious link between human behavior and natural disasters. Let's not pretend that we know everything there is to know about everything.

What if natural disasters were just "nature".

Otherwise, who is to think they are so wise to decide what is caused by who, and why?

Peter: Thank you for responding. I don't know whether you believe in God or not, however God oversees natural disasters and "nature" as well as human behavior. And as I said there is a link between the two. Man's thoughts and behavior do have an effect, however small, on natural occurrences.

I don't know what I think of God, there's so many opinions, and I even enjoy the writings of atheists like Carl Sagan and Issac Asimov. So I try not to think of it in a way that is too literal. I do know religion makes no sense when it's too literal, but it can make a lot of sense when taken poetically and symbolically. The idea of natural disasters caused by humans sounds too self indulgent to me, and that's just what religion sounds like to me when it's taken too literally.

Peter: The religion of which you speak is Biblical religion, which, of course, is not to be taken literally for the most part. The Bible has a far greater significance than most people realize. To take the whole Bible literally makes a mockery of God. But then there is a very literal religion for the modern man, which, again, most people cannot see. The human race has evolved, and religion must evolve too.

Being raised a right wing Lutheran, I was raised to take the Bible totally literally. So it's a bit of a step to think to step back and re-learn how to think about such a thing. We never escape how we were raised, it's the first thinking that comes to us. The re-learning is always second nature.

Peter: We have a faculty for discerning spiritual truths. It's called the soul. It has nothing whatsoever to do with upbringing. Some people follow blindly their parents, others are endowed with a pure soul and learn to see God with their own eyes and not through the eyes of others. "Seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you".
