Not to be outdone by Sarah Palin, the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, has announced that she wants her own US TV series. According to Reuters, she said to reporters, that she wants to enter into the political debate over the state of American society. Street cred seems to be her first goal and she wants to hit the road running. “I want it to be a show that is me on the streets” she says. “I want me going round middle America. I want to go out and see what the needs are, and then the audience has to challenge me...to go and fix the school in Boise or get another restaurant in Allentown.”
Pundits are wondering what exactly to make of it. She seems to be trying to promote herself as a combination of Obama-style community organizer and some sort of populist akin to Sarah Palin. In rhetoric reminiscent of Sarah Palin, she repeated in her interview “ I love American people,” “I am the No. 1 fan, I love Americans.” In these weird times of retro-politics, we might wonder whether this could this lead to “Fergie Fever” and the re-emergence of some sort of royalist movement in the US!? Perhaps she is some sort of stalking horse for reactionary intrigue? Well, if we have the Tea Party back, then why not the royalists as well??
Britain's Queen Elizabeth, however, adamantly denies that the royals have anything to do with the actions of their estranged Duchess, and added that there was no truth in the rumor that her Highness was contemplating making a demand to the Tea Party movement, that they repay all estimated revenues lost in the form of unpaid taxes on tea imports since 1773.
However, some cynics believe that there maybe more to this than meets the eye, in particular, money! Maybe Fergie has eyed the rich pickings that Palin is making and decided that “I could do with some of that, as well.” The fact is the Duchess is again facing dire financial straits back in England. She is so broke that she has handed over the TV and merchandising rights of her US best seller book, “Tea for Ruby” to a movie company. She had hoped that this deal would finally help her overcome her never ending money problems. However, everything went wrong and she is now being arraigned at the High Court in London for debts of $150,000.
Her present sortie into the American media scene is rather reminiscent of the last time she came over to the United States in the 1990s. Then she used her title to keep herself from bankruptcy by becoming a US Weight Watchers ambassador, as well as a sometime media personality. In the same interview she says, “I love the American people because they saved my life. When the British threw me out, the Americans embraced me and said......we'll give you a second chance.” It now looks like she wants a third. Incidentally, it might be that the British “threw” her out, because she owed the Queen's bankers $7million.
Finally, when asked about this whole affair, a source in White House said, “if the Duchess goes any further with all this, then we may be forced to nationalize her!
