A friend put the following comment on Facebook and asked that we pass it on. I have something to add after you read what he wrote. "People need to understand that children with special needs are not sick!! They are not searching for a cure, but just acceptance."
My first job at the age of 14 was working in a center for mentally disabled kids. I worked largely with children who were born with Down Syndrome. They are some of the sweetest people and can do a lot more than people some times give them credit. It was a very special experience to get to know children who are mentally challenged.
Kids with special needs are not limited to Down Syndrome. There are many kids out there with dysfunctional challenges for which there is no man made cure. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people who want to look the other way when they encounter such children or adults with these problems. The strange thing is that people still seem to be afraid of them as if what they have is contagious.
These children and adults with special needs are some of the most loving people and they have feelings just like you and me. So, keep that in mind when you encounter someone with special needs. They are special but nothing to be afraid of.
