I am a fan of Melissa Etheridge’s music, have appreciated the social causes she has supported and feel the gay rocker deserves love and marriage as much as the next person.
But I couldn’t help but notice that the news of Etheridge’s split with her partner, Tammy Lynn Michaels Etheridge, hit the Internet within a few hours of an announcement by multimedia retailer QVC that Etheridge is doing a live broadcast next week and that she’s about to release her next studio album.
Perhaps the couple knew that the publicity around Etheridge’s latest musical endeavors would also draw attention to the state of her personal life and that ‘coming clean’ now would allow the gossip to peak and fall before the record hit shelves.
In a statement today, according to the Associated Press, the two requested "consideration and respect for our family as we go through this difficult period."
But if it’s a difficult period, perhaps holding off on the record should have been considered. Like Tiger returning to golf this month while his marriage is in clear disrepair, I’m left to wonder about the priorities of these celebrities.
