Umbrella: A device for protection against the rain or sun. Umber: A yellowish-brown color. Ella: A girl's name. Put the two together and what have you got? A yellowish-brown girl out in the rain.
Umbrella is a funny enough name when you stop to think about it. But two other names for umbrella that I learned as a kid are even funnier: Barolly and Bumberchute. I don't know if a barolly is related to a tarolly, or if a bumberchute is a kind of parachute but they are both ridiculous names. Then there is the German word regenschirm. I only know one word of German and that's it.
I don't use an umbrella, I seldom did. They are more nuisance than they are worth. It's hard getting in and out of a taxi with one. Once while shopping at a supermarket in the Caribbean during a very heavy tropical rainstorm I noticed a large leak in the roof right above the canned asparagus. Since this is what I had come in for I opened up my umbrella, or was it my bumberchute, and proceeded to browse the shelves without getting soaked. As I was the only customer in the store I quickly drew the attention of the staff. Giggling among themselves, they must have thought, "these crazy Americans".
Do you have an amusing umbrella story? Do you know any other names for an umbrella?
