with water withhamhock I've published a similar recipe here before, but I've modified my standard split pea soup slightly to more resemble an Indian Dal. It smells fabulous!
Pea Soup:
Ingredients:
480 gr. (2/3 lb) dried peas or lentils
5-qt crockpot
1 smoked hamhock (approx 1.5 lbs -- I get these for $3.50 from my butcher at our farmer's market)
1/8 tsp mustard seed
1/2 tsp Caribbean curry powder (McCormick's - not Indian)
1/8 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1/8 tsp garlic powder
2 thin slices mild Thai red chili
Water to cover
Put all ingredients in crockpot on high. Cover to top of hamhock with water and cook for 8 hours. Lower temperature to low and keep simmering indefinitely until it is gone. The hamhock will disintegrate within 24 hours adding meat to the soup.
I prefer lentils to peas because they are higher in fibre and protein. They will take several hours longer to mush down in the soup than standard green peas.
Total cost for approximately 10 large servings is $4.50CDN.

Why not have her make it anyway, and you can put it in tupperware containers, and freeze it in portion-sizes? That way when you want one, and Hubby doesn't, you can just heat it up!
