I'll probably get hate mail just for the title.
I love my Mac and I'm fond of saying "you can have my mac when you pry it from my cold, dead hands." Truth is, my six-year-old Mac is overloaded. I've never had a virus, never had to send it in for repairs, enjoyed every moment on it. But I think it's given me all it can give. So, I had hoped to replace it.
Facing financial reality, though, I realize that the wiser choice right now is to purchase a PC. A Mac laptop with lots of memory and the software I need will cost about $2000. My sister just ordered a Dell laptop for about $374. (It's the one featured on the back of the Parade magazine.) My software will be about $400 more and I'll have to get a new router for my wireless.
Maybe my financial status will improve in about three years and I will be able to get another Mac. For now, this is the best choice as opposed to another credit card.
I know most of you use PCs, so anything you would recommend would be great. I need something reliable, as I use it for freelance assignments, lots of Internet (my life is very boring) and do some photos. I have about $800 to spend. Any input from all of you that so love your PCs would be great. I have worked on a PC before.

You're better off (in my opinion) looking for an Emachine with an AMD processor.
We've had horrible luck with Compaqs. My sister and I each bought one in 2004, and by the time I bought my Dell 3 years later, mine had been worked on three times, in addition to the little things that my husband had done. My sister had just given up on hers after my uncle (the computer guy at a large high school) had looked at it several times as well. My husband wiped mine clean and had it working again when we went home in 2008 so I took it with me so I could get some work done (my parents have an Emachine that they bought when I was probably 15 or 16, so over 10 years ago). We left it there for my sister since hers was so messed up and my parents' is so sloooow. The computer that used to be mine is still giving her problems, and she doesn't even use it more than once or twice a week. She actually brought it up here with her just last month for my husband to fix it yet again.
