Oral conscious sedation is the most common and widely used form of sedation used today because several patients find the use of needles uncomfortable as well. When the patient has been sedated and comfortable, the dentist then proceeds to perform both routine tasks like cleaning and flossing and the arrangement of dental bridges as the case may be. Though sometimes dubbed 'sleep dentistry' the patient is fully conscious, but the effect of the sedative produces a relaxing effect.
The advantage of using oral sedation is that the patient is completely relaxed and a lot more could be done in one sitting than otherwise.
