You just had to be there. In the 1970s, Saturday Night Live skirted the ege and sometimes crossed it. I will never forget John Belushi playing a killer bee, stowing his lunch pail in his locker, punching his time card and discussing killer bee union rules with his killer bee co-workers.
Another memorable skit took place on St. Patrick's Day. They were spoofing those fraternal organizations and their habit of having a "token black" member to meet the equal opportunity requirements for nonprofit organizations. I think that Garrett Morris was playing the token black.
All the members of the Irish men's fraternity (they were not required to allow women to join) sat around drinking green beer. Then it came time to sing "Danny Boy". All the white guys kind of mumbled after the first line, and then they went back to drinking beer.
To everyone's amazement, the token black man broke out in a beautiful Irish tenor and sang all of "Danny Boy".
You just had to be there.
