Almost everyday when I get off my exit ramp there is a Vietnam Veteran holding a sign "Homeless Please Help"
Almost everyday when I got down Northampton Street there is a lady sitting against the telephone pole with a sign leaning up against it "Homeless Family"
I did give a couple of dollars to the Vietnam Vet a few times. He had a metal leg. Not sure if he really was a vet, but my heart went out to him.
As for the rest of them. Can they not get a job? They litter our streets with their signs, sitting or standing or begging for money.
One time, after my husband came home from work and dropped out son off for wrestling practice he stopped at Taco Bell by the high school. He sat down to eat and a man approached him "excuse me, do you have any spare change" My husband told him to get lost, not as nicely as that. Then a women behind him in a booth said to him, "you were a little rude to him, he just needs money". So my husband said to her, "Do you think he does not receive any money"? She said "no" . My husband called the guy back over and asked the following questions:
"Sir, Let me ask you a couple of questions, do you receive a welfare check"?
The man replied yes I do. My husband then asked to you receive a disability check from Social Security? He replied yes.
Do you stay at a shelter that provides some ammeneties for you? Again he replied yes. He also said that he spent his money for the month and was just looking for more.
My husband thanked him for answering the questions and turned back to the lady in the booth who was shocked. He said to her, "you see mam, he already gets my money."
I do not like seeing these people loiterring our streets. I do not like to be called after sometimes when I am leaving a store and being asked for money. I don't know why store managers won't chase them away.
I don't mind helping people. I know people need help. I am much more willing to help people who are trying to help themselves. Who try to be a better part of society, who may have fell on hard times and are trying to get ahead again. Most of these people from what I can see want the money for their next 40oz.
