I Shared My Nighttime Break With This Little Fellow

As many of you know, I work at the hospital from 7p=7a. We have a beautiful courtyard just outside the Progressive Care Unit. Many of us take our breaks out there. We share this courtyard with a bevy of critters, including 2 cats (been there for years), a family of raccoons, owls, many other species of birds, turtles in the pond and a family of opossums.

The other night, I was on break and I heard a noise in the tree near where I was sitting. I looked up and saw this little fellow in the notch of the tree. As not to scare him, I quietly got up and went inside for my camera. He was still there when I came back out.

I got as close as possible, put a bit of zoom on the camera and got several pictures before he decided that my flash was just too much for his nocturnal eyes.

He's cute, but they love cat food and if they are hungry enough they will put up a BIG fight to get some of that food. My cats are terrified of them!

When we had cats fed on our deck, the possums definitely came up to dine. The cats learned to coexist. One night a small one crawled under some blankets with the cats! "Lenore" was huge and a regular diner.

So interesting to see the nocturnal animals come out isn't it? We live near the Illinois River and many times have raccoons, foxes, opossums, and wild turkeys in our yard. I love nature, thank for sharing =)

My hubby even "picked one" out of our cherry tree once. Unfortunately he lost the pictures I had. I have had grown ones come in the back door if I left it propped open for the cats.

Hmmm, opossum's, "Raiders of the lost garbage pail." Weawaoke mone morning to the frantic clawing of a baby opossum traqpped in orur garbage pail. Brave man that I am, I tipped it over and ran.

These are some very neat captures and I will reccomend them.

Great pics Nancy. I would have run & got the camera too. I love to watch them but must say I am a little leary of them. I have cats also & wonder what would happen to them, but if they can co-habitate then I am ok with that. I love my cats they are all feral but you wouldn't know that by the way I watch out for them.

That is a possum. There was an episode of Parks & Recreation last night that had to do with possums on the golf course. That is what the possum looked like.

Oh, I know. This is one of the young ones. The babies were born last Spring. We have a new nursery every Spring. So, I suppose we will have babies again in a few months.

I am sorry I don't know why but possums I find eww. For me to say this is weird for anything other creature well other then a snake I want one for myself lol.

This one is cute. There is one that comes up on my porch sometimes that is very old and not cute at all. Little new things are always cute.

They are cute but don't let him fool you they are also very viscious. The next time you see the raccoons try tossing them some jumbo marshmallows, they love them.
