Freshman Baylor center Brittney Griner was ejected from yesterday’s game against Big 12 opponent Texas Tech. The tensions boiled over in the second half when Tech’s Jordan Barncastle got tangled up while guarding Griner in the paint. Barncastle yanked her arms away from Griner, who took offense and retaliated with a punch to Barncastle’s face while her head was turned. The benches cleared, the coaches came out to settle things down, and Barncastle left with cotton up her nose. Griner is a 6-8 force for Baylor and former high school superstar known for her dunking ability. When the punch landed she had already accumulated 21 points for the 14th-ranked Bears on their way to a 69-60 victory in Lubbock. Both coaches were bothered by the incident, and we can expect to see a suspension of some sort for Griner. Baylor probably hopes it doesn’t bleed into the women’s NCAA tournament, but it was a pretty severe action for the fairly common occurrence of jostling down low by the basket. Barncastle seemed to gather herself well enough on the bench but is scheduled to be examined today.
