"GOOGLE IT!"

I was just responding to a post by one of my Gather friends and she had mentioned that she and her neice were arguing about an expression and her neice said "Google It!"

GOOGLING something is the norm in this day and age. When I was growing up (and even when my girls were young) we used to say "LOOK IT UP!" And by this I meant get the dictionary or the encyclopedia. But with the internet at everyone's fingertips, "LOOK IT UP!" means either GOOGLE IT or check out WIKIPEDIA.

A really good set of encyclopedias, complete with leather binding and gold leaf trimmed pages, was a prize to have in your home. Now you can find complete sets at yard sales for $5...and then they don't even sell.

Kinda of a shame, I think. I loved "looking up" something. I will admit I do not have any encyclopedias but I do have a HUGE, unabridged Webster's Dictionary. And yes, I use it!

Does anyone still have encyclopedias or dictionaries? The real things...real books, not virtual?

Yes! I do have both,and they come in Handy when someone is challenged on a word when playing Scrabble. Good point.

I use mine alot doing crossword puzzles.
nope! encyclopedias are out of date so quickly these days, and as for a dictionary, there's always dictionary.com. I can only imagine how my two year olds will research someday!

nope, i dont. i think its funny though, that phrase "google it" is still extremely new, i mean...back in 2000 i dont think anyone would have understood it. now, its common knowledge. google really has taken over that market lol

I use a dictionary quite often... can't always pull out a computer to look up a word. However, I don't have a set of encylcopedia any more. And as expensive as they are and as out dated as they can get in just one year... I'm thankful the internet has elimenated a need for them. I do, however, use real books, newspapers and magazines/journals for research. And I love real books for pure enjoyment purposes.

we do have a College dictionary laying around here somewhere...my daughter in college just used it while she was back for a weekend..the first time it was used in years

Yes, I have a dictionary, and when I was younger I used to have a set or two of encyclopedias, which I used for reports that I wrote for school and also for curiosity's sake. I still use my dictionary a few times a week!

I do have a dictionary but it's VERY outdated. I would never buy a new one because not only can I just "Google" it but I already have too many books and I'm running out of space for them all! I don't like buying any brand-new books because of all the waste created. I'm not ready to go entirely digital but I'm happy to wait until I can buy used which doesn't always work for a dictionary or encyclopedias.

I have dictionaries and other reference books. I do not use them. I could, though. No encyclopedias.

Yes, I have a couple of great dictionaries, and use them occasionally. More often, if online, I will use an online dictionary.

I still have dictionary and the set of encyclopedia's my parents bought. I also have the set of The Book of Knowledge I bought my kids. They are seldom used but still find them interesting.

I have a dictionary and thesaurus...somewhere. With 2 kids in just under 3 years, we have re-purposed our rooms quite a few times, and my books just keep getting shuffled around. I typically "google" whatever I am looking for, but I will often check a couple of sources if I'm really curious.

When I am on line I Google, when I am not I research the old fashioned way in books. I am a proofreader working with ESL students (graduate +) I have a variety of English/foreign language dictionaries. I enjoy both, Google for speed and for my work, reference books for when I cannot read another word on-line!

I have a full set of encyclopedias from 1876, and they likely get more use than a set from 1996 would. The world changes so quickly, it doesn't make sense to invest in this product anymore.

Sadly, we gave away our encyclopedias when we moved, but they went to a good home. We do have some good dictionaries and sometimes I'll just sit and peruse.
