Thanks to Gather and some other sites I'm on, I had a lot of Amazon gift cards built up. I used them to buy a Nesco dehydrator, jerky gun, and jerky seasonings. This week, I made my first batch of beef jerky. It turned out so great!! I used the leanest ground beef I could get from the local meat market, which is conveniently located 1/2 block away from me. The jerky gun is the greatest tool ever! I dehydrated the beef jerky strips for 5 hours. They are sooooo good!!
The strips in the process of being dehydrated.

My new toy -- a Nesco dehydrator!
I can't wait to try dehydrating fruit! And I'd like to try some other flavors of beef jerky besides original. I'm thinking teriyaki next.
Anybody have good jerky recipes?

I was taught to do this by a "old timer".
I was taught to do fish, cheese, pickled stuff too.
Though the way I was taught to do jerky (both beef and turkey. Some deer and elk), was very time consuming and hard on the hands. Roasts were used but for the turkey of course. Th waste the dogs got to eat, no complaints from them either!! lol
His dryers were a older kind, rather big and not made anymore. The fish were dried in this crude built one and only apple wood was used for smoking.
I wonder how the new ones work compared to those I was taught with??
The recipe used for the jerky, I think I could remember it. But it was a dash of this and a little of that lol! We saw some spices all ready to go in the hunting department of a store in the next town over, but never used them.
This is cool and I would like to buy some dryers and get to doing it again.
