TMNet Streamyx these days referred to as just Streamyx is the major internet service provider in Malaysia.Streamyx is also the only fixed broadband internet service provider in Malaysia. TM Berhad or previously referred to as Telekom Malaysia Berhad is the parent company of Streamyx. Notably TM Net offers its internet DSL(Digital Subscriber Line) broadband internet under the trade name Streamyx.
TM Net was set up in 1995 by Telekom Malaysia Bhd (which later morphed into TM Berhad) as part of Malaysia National Broadband Plan.
It was initially started on a trial between TMnet and COINS.
The 1st commercial trial of xDSL by TM was done through a service known as HiS that was deployed jointly with Ericsson in 1999.
The first Streamyx broadband internet service was introduced in 04 2001 at speeds of 384kbps.
In 06 2007, TMNet Streamyx begins the 4MBps service which is presently, is the highest available speed.
10 12 2009, Streamyx announced a new 15mbps fiber optic service under High Speed Broadband (HSBB) and is likely to be released by 03 2010. Presently the Malaysian internet facilities have been identified as not reaching the current specifications as essential by basic web applications such as that of YouTube, Skype and hence concludes that Malaysia may not ultimately reap the benefits of broadband internet. On another note, Malaysia's High Speed Broadband Project is hope to to address this concern.
