FINE John Mayer, you have our attention again. Now please wow us with your thoughts on life and love.
That he did, in his latest interview with Playboy Magazine. The interview is chock full great lines that together form a pool of evidence that tells us that John Mayer is maybe just a little weirder, or drunker, or maybe just more attention-starved, than we thought.
What everyone's really talking about are Mayer's less-than-careful comments about black people, and particularly regarding his thoughts on dating black women. First came the bit about a "hood pass":
Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a nigger pass.
And did you hear the one about John Mayer and black women?
PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?
MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My dick is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a f**kin’ David Duke c**k. I’m going to start dating separately from my d**k.
So is John Mayer racist? I really, really don't think so. I think he was probably tipsy, and was trying way too hard to come off as fresh and uninhibited. He's also naive if he didn't think saying these things wouldn't set people off. I don't think his use of the N-word is necessarily racist, but it's insensitive. I'm tempted to say that black women might be offended by a comment like that, but really I think the more common reaction would be "John Mayer who?"
