Chemical straightening provides a break from the daily battle with home straighteners. For women with coarse, wavy hair, hand held home straighteners can takes hours to do the job. The answer? Chemical straightening- this provides a long term straightening effect and can reduce the morning routine to a few minutes.
Unfortunately, chemical straightening requires some heavy duty products which have the potential to seriously damage hair.
Jo from Leytonstone explains; ‘Getting my hair straightened at the hairdressers was the worst mistake of my life. The stylist forgot to apply a base cream, and the chemicals burnt into my scalp, leaving scars and blisters. My hair changed from being healthy and glossy to dull, brittle straw.
I was in so much pain and months later, my hair has not fully recovered. It is so lifeless now.
The biggest reason for chemical straightening gone wrong is because the hairdresser doesn’t make the effort of carrying out safety checks before the process begins.
Before anyone has their hair chemically straightened, even if they’ve had the procedure before they should:
• Have their hair type, structure and elasticity determined by a strand test. This involves a professional testing how much ‘give’ there is in your hair, to ensure it will withstand the stress of the chemicals.
• Have the straightening procedure timed precisely and accurately, as only a few minutes either way can ruin the result.
• Receive an application of protective base cream to their hairline, tops and backs of the ears and hair partings.
• Have the chemicals washed off with warm water, as hot or cold temperatures prevent the process from working, or can lead to injuries.
