I've been waiting for this movie's DVD release since I missed it in theaters, and lets just say it didn't disappoint!
The main plot here is that the 4 main characters have survived the zombie apocalypse, this is their story of moving on. Each one of the characters has their own past they are running from but now they also have to survive being eaten by zombies. (Possible spoiler how the zombies became zombies - if you don't want to know skip to next paragraph. Zombies were created because of Mad cow virus being spread to humans and causing them to go mad and thus zombies.)
The character we are following is Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), because they might have to kill each other they don't know each others real names. They all just become the place they are from. Columbus just wants to get home and see if any family remains, on the way he meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson). Together they continue on, Columbus quickly learns that Tallahassee really hates zombies and enjoys killing them. He also learns that there is something Tallahassee wants so bad he's willing to risk their lives to get it. It's a safe bet no one without seeing the movie would guess just what that is.
In his quest for this item they run into Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), two cute and clever girls.
From here there is zombie killing, Celebrity Cameo (one of the best parts of the movie) and laughs.
Now I must warn you if you don't like cussing or blood and guts - don't want this movie. The amount of cussing in the movie is ridiculous but then again if I was being chased by zombies I'd probably be dropping the F bomb too. Blood and guts is the worst in the first 5 minutes, if you can get past that it's pretty minor. Mostly the zombies spit up the black blood bile stuff.
However the laughs for me outweighed both of the above, I laughed and laughed! I think this movie is how I would act if I was in a Zombie world, guns, baseball bats, big cars and breaking stuff. And again I quote the movie, one of the best lines is about Tallahassee, "He was in the ass kicking business before Zombieland." says Columbus the narrator then they shoot to a shot of Tallahassee with two chainsaws he then says "And business is GOOD!" I laughed out loud and so did my husband.
Casting was perfect for this movie, I found it to be a fantastic Zombie movie. There are very few cliques and they did take the fresh approach on how the zombies became zombies.
I highly recommend this movie to the following people -
- Zombie movie lovers
- Horror film lovers
- Comedy lovers who don't mind cussing and guts
- Or a Halloween movie night!
I do not recommend this movie to the following
- Hardcore Christians
- Weak Stomachs
- Kids - mine aren't going to be allowed to watch this until they are well in their teens.
- I mean this in a nice way "Uptight" people.
A few cool production facts -
This was originally made to be a TV series, when that didn't work they extended it out to be a movie.
There was only one "traditional" set.
The zombie makeup took anywhere for hour and a half to 15 minutes - depending on how close you were to the camera.
The budget for this movie - 23.6 million which is low budget but doesn't feel low budget. (Sherlock Holmes was 90 million, the tooth fairy movie which feels low budget 48 million)
On my scale of 5 stars I give this movie a solid 4.5 stars. A value of $17, meaning I would pay up to $17 for the DVD.
On a FINAL note - If you enjoy the movie I highly recommend you watch the special features - there are some good laughs in those too. :0)
