Heard ’em cheer a mile away; the dust humming like bees. Clattering hooves, jangling harness, saddles creak—heard that when they got close. And the hot breath huffing from their noses, horse and rider both, like the death-watch on their shoulders. I was all ears, all listening, bound to be, after the prophecies old Sam poured over me. Then little brother Ted, out in the lead; I’m shouting loud as a steam-train coming, but he stops and I see his face, all soaked in tears. “Ted,†I shout but he drops like a straw in the wind and it’s over.
