It seems that all the furniture stores are having big sales this time of year, and I am constantly seeing commercials from El Dorado and Rooms To Go. One of my favorite stores Ikea has jumped on the sales wagon, and they are having new deals every day. Today they have a queensized bed at %50 off at $99, and my local Ikea has lots of other fantastic deals as well.
This made me think about how we have actually added a lot of furniture to our home this year. In January of last year we had a whirlwind move, where we literally moved overnight. We went to see the place in the morning, while my oldest son was at school, and before we left the place my husband had called some friends to help move. When we picked up our son from school he lived in a new home. Fortunately everything from the apartment to the location was an upgrade, and we were all very excited.
Since our move we have added a nice sleeper couch (I am so happy to be rid of our old ugly brown couch), a huge hutch, two tables for the living room, a shelf system for the kids room, a new living room chair from Ikea thanks to my dad, and last but not least our fantastic $13 new dining room table and chairs.

We old have three pieces of furniture in our home that was bought new, the rest of it has all been given through us through various sources such as freecycle and my husband's work. In our old apartment everything was a mix of whatever we could get for free, and there was no real flow to it. I am happy to say that after a year in our new place, we have finally gotten the flow going, and I feels like home.
Everything except for the Ikea chair and the storage system for the kids room has been acquired used and free.
Next on my wishlist is "new" dining room chairs and "new" patio furniture.

I was also given a few pieces from family members.
We are saving for new flooring, once that is done, we will get new furniture - room by room
Let's see... the things I got new were my bed and dresser, and my desk chair. The desk chair and the bed were the only things I was really super-concerned about. The bed & dresser were from Bob's Furniture-- they have really nice stuff, and pretty decent prices. The desk chair was from Staples.
My mom had contributed a small kitchen table and two chairs when I moved in, and a shelf unit that she'd gotten new, but at discount sort of stores. Another few small tables were passed down from family. The rest of my stuff was pretty much all from Craigslist-- desk, couch, tv stand, some other tables... I definitely always check there first.
Most of our furniture is second-hand, given to us when neighbors have moved away. Some I found put out for trash, very little was bought.

My father in law died and my daughter wanted his recliner, so we have that. I got a TV from someone on Freecycle who threw in the stand... other than that, no.
What is next on your furniture wishlist?
I'd love to have a push-button recliner or a couch. Even a loveseat would be nice.
We don't like much of what Ikea has for furniture. A lot of it is crap. BUT - they do have a few nice pieces here and there that are solid wood and not particle board. The bookcases and buffet are wonderful!
The only thing I am wanting right now is bookshelves. All my books are in boxes right now. So I think I will have to buy those new.
We did get new furniture this past year....we bought a new living room set. Also, someone gave us a dresser that matched Elliott's bedroom perfectly. Unfortunately we had already bought a cheap dresser at WalMart that turned out to be junk, but I think I will put it in my closet for extra storage. It won't matter as much that it's junk since it won't be used much.
Our whole bedroom set (bed, headboard, nightstand, dresser with mirror, and chest of drawers) was bought new when Elliott was a baby. It was on clearance, though. :) We bought them at the Ashley furniture store.
Our kitchen table and chairs, and bookcases all came to us brand new as well. They came from places like KMart and Walmart, though. None of them are great quality, but none of them are pieces we plan to move when we PCS anyway, so as long as they last us while we are actually here, that's all that matters. :)
The other stuff was all given to us or bought second hand.
Still need lighting and window treatments for the study and the bedroom, otherwise these two rooms are furnished new and look wonderful. The study still has two large bookshelves I got at the Salvation Army and I think I may just paint them stain them decoupoage them or who knows what:)
I'm on the look out for new dining furniture, actually have been for about a year. I may visit Ikea for their sale.
Some time this year we are re-vamping the living room with a new flat screen and a new entertainmentcenter/storage/hutch.
I don't have a favorite store, but if I could afford it I'd have nothing but Bernhardt furniture and handcrafted artisan furniture in the entire house.
CraigsList, friends and family, side of the road, & garage sales are where we get most of ours.
