Bungee jumping is perhaps the original "extreme" sport, practiced by native tribes on Pentecost Island for centuries as a right of passage into manhood. Diving from wooden platforms well-over a hundred feet high, individuals would free-fall with only a vine attached to their ankle to prevent death as they landed face first in a pile of soft dirt. Today, the act of bungee jumping has progressed far technologically, but there are still many valid reasons not to attempt to bungee jump at all. While the reasons to bungee jump are few, the reasons not to bungee jump are numerous and for good reason - bungee jumping is a dangerous activity, and with every jump the possibility of death exists.
One of the main reasons not to bungee jump is for social acceptance. Whether the reason is to be accepted among friends participating in the endeavor or using bungee jumping as a way to assert one's courage and manhood, the result of bungee jumping does not justify the potential risk for disaster. When faced with the possibility of social ostracism resulting from a wise decision not to risk your life, it is important to remember that your new friends will be of little use to you after a painful death from a bungee jumping accident.
Another excellent reason not to bungee jump is that it is never a smart move to tempt fate, whether you believe in it or not. The best laid plans tend to go wrong when affected by the human touch, and bungee jumping is no exception, Errors can occur while bungee jumping that are attributable to both human and equipment failure, and are purely acts of fate when they happen and to whom they distress. An exchange of 40 or fifty years of a productive and rich life for a few seconds of exhilaration is a bad bargain, and is perhaps the most sound reason not to bungee jump.
Many people partake of bungee jumping to participate in an activity that is out of their normal character, just "for kicks". This thought process in and of itself is a most valid reason not to bungee jump, as there are literally thousands of activities that can raise adrenaline levels without the risk of injury of death. A much more appropriate way to get an adreniline rush can be obtained without chancing injury or death, and the simple fact is that bungee jumping is not for everyone. The idea to go bungee jumping should never be attempted as a spur of the moment thought, in every instance it should be considered at length.
