Per profootballtalk.com, the Buffalo Bills have announced a press conference to take place today, December 31, at 2:30 pm EST.
There are no indications as to the subject of the press conference. Given that the team is looking to bring on a new head coach and general manager for 2010, some speculate that will be the topic on the agenda.
Which begs the question, why announce something on New Year's Eve just prior to the final weekend of the regular season? This curious timing suggests an immediate event of such magnitude that it could not be kept under wraps.
Enter Bill Cowher. Reports have surfaced over the past two weeks that Cowher has been sending out signals that he is ready to return to head coaching in the NFL. Would he come back as just head coach? Is it more likely that he would have to have the full control of the general manager's slot to lure him to a lousy organization in the frozen tundra?
Enter Toronto or Los Angeles. The pre-season was filled with rumors that the organization might be looking to jump Niagra Falls and relocate in Toronto, Canada. This move would be unprecedented as there are no NFL franchises located outside the United States. Of course, with Los Angeles approving a new football stadium and word being the city is looking to attract possibly two franchises, through expansion or relocation, this is still a possibility as well.
Enter Terrell Owens. There is no reason to expect that this news conference has anything to do with Owens, but anytime mass media hype is mentioned in Owens' vacinity, he can't be ruled out as the subject. Perhaps he and the team have agreed to a long-term deal for him to finish his career with a 'winner' franchise.
Whatever the story, the Bills appear confident they can take some of the excitement away from the New Year's Day slate of college bowl games.
