Lately I’ve noticed fans and athletes giving many different chapters and verses from the Bible on signs and on eye lids. It used to be you’d only see a sign with John 3:16: (Paramount in importance to probably all Evangelicals). I remember back when there weren’t many TV channels and the camera guy would zoom in on people holding signs. Some would say, “Hi, Mom; Send Money; Will you Marry me,“ and paying customers would complain they were in the way and sometimes a few bad words would slip out. However, the dude or gal holding the John 3:16 sign was immune. I always felt sure that the fans behind this upstanding polite Christian did not mind having their view blocked. I always envisioned them huddling together with beer and brats and reading Hebrews 13: 5~6 after the sign was gently lowered. I think football fans across the country applaud this man for writing such big letters for those whom read big print. I guess a football stadium is as good as a church the way everything is so politically correct nowadays. I feel like writing a sermon about what Jesus actually said, which did not include hatred or fried chicken. (I have faith God has a sense of humor).
I’ve been thinking of some really good Bible verse signs people could hold up almost anywhere, but not in the men’s or women’s restrooms. Why stop at sporting events? Long line at the supermarket: Pull out your Bible verse signs, since most around might be snarling, but they are good Sunday morning Christians. The Christian faith has always wanted converts and once upon a time that seems like a fairy tale, churches actually cared about helping people and communities and were not overtly political. Now, hate has seeped in, so there is no hope in divisiveness. Just moral issues to scream, holler and single people out for abuse and sometimes violence. I have yet to find any words of Jesus supporting such thought and behavior. Jesus actually condemns such thought because such thought has no love. God is Love. Never forget this because God has not asked but commanded us to love. I have never thought an insult has much love. Sorry, I got to sermonizing and got carried away. Sort of like trying to eat only one piece of Divinity. I’m talking about Bible signs because there are some I never see held up on TV, which I’d like to see, so I’ll make a short list for you good Christians whom forget God sees your heart.
