Florida State Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden, whose 388 career victories trail only Joe Paterno for the most in NCAA history, will announce his retirement Tuesday morning, sources close to ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach are reporting.
Bowden, 80, coached the Seminoles to national championships in 1993 and 1999, and 14 straight top-five finishes in the Associated Press top-25 poll from 1987 to 2000.
Schlabach's sources are reporting that Bowden met with Florida State president T.K. Wetherall and athletic director Randy Spetman Monday, who gave Bowden the option of either retiring after this season or returning to the team in 2010-11 in an "ambassador" role that would have left Bowden with very little control in the team's daily operations.
Seminoles offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, who was selected as Bowden's eventual successor back in 2007 to eliminate the need for an extended search for Bowden's replacement, has already agreed to terms on a contract to officially become the team's head coach next season.
