The Hobbit

I remember watching an animated version of The Hobbit as a made for TV version starring Orson Bean as Bilbo Baggins back in 1977. This was the beginning of epoch movies.

There was a movie that included a combination of actors and animation. I saw this version and was very disappointed. The plan was to cover The Lord of the Rings in two films. That is not possible. I do not remember it doing very well at the box office.

The Hobbit is being filmed once more and, from what I read, will be released in December 2011. They are making this into two parts. I am very curious to see how they manage to make two full length movies from this small book by J. R. R. Tolkien.

The rumored cast appears to be excellent with:

Ian McKlellen as Galdalf

Hugo Weaving as Elrond

Ron Perleman as Thorin

Andy Serkis as Gollum

This is in the early stages of filming so I don't have a great deal of information. I first heard about this during an interview with Ian McKlellen. He wasn't saying a lot except about it being a two part movie.

Synopsis from The Hobbit: Part 1 (2011) which I hope will be updated from time to time:

"Local Shire hobbit Bilbo Baggins, uncle of Frodo Baggins, is living a quiet, peaceful life until Gandalf the Grey knocks on his door. A band of wandering dwarves shows up one or two at a time. The goal? To hire poor Bilbo for a quest (as a burgler) that entails defeating a dragon and recovering (burgling) a treasure. Along the way there are adventures with trolls and elves, a battle with goblins, the naming of Bilbo's sword as Sting after a battle with some spiders, escaping from Wargs, and a barrel ride in a river. There is a great battle, The Battle of Five Armies, which includes men, dwarves, elves, goblins with Wargs, and more. Most importantly of all, part of this story leads Bilbo into Riddles in the Dark where he meets Gollum and in the process acquires a peculiar ring that has had and will have a great impact on the future of their world."

I have always enjoyed "The Lord Of the Rings." I make a hobbit to read and watch anything associated with it so am looking forward to it indeed.

From childhood I loved the way "Hobbit" rolled off of the tongue, not many words evoke as many images as the word hobbit!

Absolutely, Diane. I do believe the made for TV version sparked interest in these books. I have always enjoyed these books. Tolkien weaves a fantastic story.

I can't seem to get in to these, but knowing the girls like them I spent a lot of money on a Lord of the Rings Trilogy curriculum

I read "The Hobbit" and the first "Lord of the Rings" book when I was in college. My sister sent me a set of the books in paperback when I was in H.S. They followed me wherever I went for years and then I finally decided to read them. I never got past the 1st Lord of the Rings book. I thought that they were well written and enjoyable. I saw the first movie, when it was on HBO, awhile back. Thought it was terrific.

Tolkien does weave a wonderful but complex story. I thoroughly enjoyed the books and the movies. I highly recommend them.

I saw an animated movie version in 1970 or '71 and was thoroughly disgusted with it. I heard they were going to make this and I'm looking forward to it.

There is so much that was left out of The Lord of the Rings due to nothing more than a time restraint. They simply can't cover everything. LOL!
I would like to see it. The Lord of the Rings Movies were done well.
I remember the cartoon version by Rankin Bass.

I have all three 'Lord of the Rings' movies on DVD.
I will want to see the movie 'The Hobbit' once it's at the theatre.

I really recommend this book.
My boys will love this movie- I Am going to have to get this bok for them to read as well.
I read them the lord of the rings one year.

They will probably like that book.

I read the Lord of the Rings to my second son. He thoroughly enjoyed it. I do tend to get into the character of the book changing my voice with each one. It makes it more of an adventure. LOL!
I do the same thing and then when I don't do the voice they stat telling me- PLease do the voice mommm do the voice!!!!

This is very interesting to know. I got hooked on The Hobbit ages ago and would love to see a modern movie made. It seems Peter Jackson is co-writing it but someone else will direct it. I wonder how that will work out.

I love the new movies, They should have made the Hobbit first though, preserve the natural order of the story so to speak. I have a copy of the animated Return of the King which went back to the original Hobbit animation. I too was disappointed in the second one.

It was best seen on a large screen but it just didn't work. It's so abstract. Like a moving painting.

They don't always do things in proper order. Even though everyone knows that Bilbo Baggins is the one who found the One Ring, not everyone knows the story. It should be fun. I am looking forward to this new filming.
