You could have predicted the first two games wouldn't be competitive but the NFL scores from yesterday's Thanksgiving Day games provided a third lopsided score that I didn't see coming. I thought the NY Giants vs Denver Broncos would be a hard fought game that would come down to a late fourth quarter score that would determine the winner.
That wasn't the case as Denver finally put a stop to their four game skid, getting back into the win column as they defeated the NY Giants, 26 - 6. After taking a 16 - 0 lead into the locker room at halftime the closest the Broncos let the Giants get was to within 10 points at 16 - 6. From there they extended their lead in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory with a Kyle Orton to Brandon Stokley touchdown pass and a Matt Prater field goal.
The Broncos defense that led them to a 6 - 0 start this season was back last night at home in Invesco Field at Mile High. They shut down the Giants rushing game, holding them to 57 yards, and at the same time were able to contain Eli Manning and the passing game. Overall the Broncos held the Giants offense to 267 yards and forced three turnovers (two recovered fumbles and one interception).
So is the Broncos defense back and ready for the playoff push after taking a month long break? We probably won't be able to determine that for a couple of weeks. Next week will not be a determination as they play a weak Chiefs team, but on Sunday December 13 they battle the Colts, who will probably still be undefeated at that point. That will be the true test that will show us if this Broncos team can be a threat in the post season.
The Broncos move to 7 - 4, still trailing the San Diego Chargers in the AFC West standings. The Giants slip to 6 - 5 on the season and need to put some wins together to make sure they grab a playoff spot. They need to win next week at home against NFC East leading Dallas Cowboys to keep themselves in the division race, not to mention the wild card race.
