Do any of you science fiction fans remember the 1970s series, Space: 1999? I loved that show!
The underlying storyline of Space: 1999 centered on the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha following a calamity on 13 September 1999. A huge nuclear waste dump on the far side of the Moon detonates in a massive thermonuclear explosion, initiated by the buildup of magnetic radiation which was released, causing a nuclear chain reaction. The force of the explosion causes the Moon to be sent hurtling out of Earth's orbit and into deep space at colossal speed, stranding the 311 crew members.

It's all about suspending disbelief. I can't stand these people who analyze such things and then call them rubbish. but was Space 1999 entirely British? Martin Landau starred and when British programme makers hire expensive American stars it is usually because there is American money involved.
That explains it, Grade was very successful at selling series to the American networks by featuring names the US viewers would know. He hired Tony Curtis to star alongside Roger Moore in the Persuaders and names don't come bigger than Tony Curtis.
It wasn't entirely crap for me, it was filmed in this area so I could watcg and say, "That's on Grane Moor... that loks like Irwell Vale... And Julie Graham was in it, she's always worth watching.
I saw a couple of episodes of the original series a while back - probably on one of the sky channels... My god, I'd forgotten how 'brown' that series was.... and how WET and muddy!
So, feeling all left out, I looked up something else instead: the 60's German series Space Patrol Orion. I remembered the music and the look of the flying saucers perfectly, but otherwise it's pretty much blank. (My generation actually saw the reruns in the early 80's, so of course we laughed our heads off at the inanity, but we loved it anyway.)
