Yes you heard right. Oprah Winfrey, the reining queen of daytime talk shows is handing in her towel. She will make the big announcement on her talk show today (Friday, Nov. 20th). After 25 years Oprah's The Oprah Winfrey Show will come to its end. The 55 year-old business woman's current program reaches about seven million viewers a day. But don't fret you seven million viewers, Oprah is starting her own network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). It has been widely rumored, by People Magazine, that Oprah will bring The Oprah Winfrey Show to the OWN network--a joint venture with Discovery Communications.
CBS has offered nothing but well wishes for Oprah and all her future endeavors. "We know that anything she turns her hand to will be a great success. We look forward to working with her for the next several years and hopefully afterward as well." Of course you do CBS, she most likely brought in the most ad money of any show on your network, it will be a big paycheck cut to let her go. Oprah is Oprah and CBS is right about the fact that anything she touches will turn to gold.
It will be interesting to hear what Oprah's rivals, admirers, and critiques have to say about the Queen's retirement. Martha Stewart said "she's not retiring. She'll do another show. She's evolving. She's fabulous." All true Martha. Gayle King, editor-at-large for O Magazine and the talk show hosts best friend, says "This was definitely Oprah's decision, and Oprah's decision alone." I guess this statement is to ward off rumors that CBS and Harpo might of had a falling out. Gayle went on to say "I think that Oprah always makes the best decision for herself. I really do. And I have a feeling she will come up with some things to do. She has a very full life … We don't need to worry about her filling her time, I promise you that! Life is good for her."
Talk show rival and friend of Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres said on her show that Oprah had just called to tell her that she was ending in 2011. Ellen gave Winfrey credit as a trail blazer, "I don't think I could have been here without her. She has blazed a trail...She is an amazing woman."
What do Oprah's fans have to say about the end of an era? You tell me?
