All-time NBA scoring leader Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has cancer it was announced earlier today. The 62-year old Jabbar has leukemia.
According to statements made in the last 24 hours, Jabbar was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in December 2008 and has been battling the disease since.
Amidst the sad news has been some hope for Jabbar as his middle son, Amir, 28, is a medical student and has helped the NBA legend.
According to an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Jabbar said about his son, "he was a real great source for me, just that I can talk to him about it. Being a doctor, he understood what was happening, and gave me realistic viewpoint on it.
Initially, Jabbar reported having hot flashes and sweats and blood tests revealed his white blood cell count was elevated.
His doctors say he is now taking medication and should live a normal life.
