I'm so sorry. I will continute to pray for God to change his heart.

You CANNOT change him only create an environment in which he will change. My thought is that until he feels responsiblity for his son he will not and you steeping in as a parent is only enabling his negative behavior meaning why make it easier for him.

I am very close to this child. He is my first grandson, and he has mostly grown up here. His mother is now getting her head together, and I will always want him on the weekends. I almost wish Brandon Sr. Would not have showed up. He did come back, 5 hours after he said he would, and left again. I am going to have another talk with him today. Thanks so much for your input.

Daniel, if she didn't step in she would be hurting the child. The little one needs to know he is loved and he needs to feel safe and protected. His father may never be able to provide that. God can work miracles but He helps those who help themselves... not those who stand back and wait for Him to "do something".

In a sense Daniel is correct. Your son knows you will always be there for Brandon and will take advantage of it. However sometimes we have to put the best interest of our grandchildren first. If it means we are enabling our own children to act more irresponsibly than so be it. The children should never have to suffer hurt because of their parents actions.

Diane I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. I too am always there for my grandsons and wishing my adult children would grow up.

I have known of similar situations when friends who were grandparents have had to step in for the sake of the grandchildren, because their own children refused to be responsible parents. I have seen the outcome of this, too. The grandchildren are very grateful to their grandparents for having done so. The grandchildren turned out to be happy, well-adjusted and responsible young adults in the end because of the stability given to them by their grandparents. While it's true that taking care of the children's responsibility to be parents to their own children sort of lets the children off the hook towards their own children, the welfare of the grandchildren is just too important during these impressionable and formitive years of their young lives to not step in. You can only do the best you can to support the grandchildren during their tender years so that hopefully they, too, will be able to grow up as happy, well-adjusted and responsible adults themselves. I can't speak from my own experiences, I can only relate other peoples' experiences that I have witnessed for myself.
