what he did to Shelby’s room.”
Emily put down the appliqués and headed for the door leading Cheri to Shel’s little girls room. Emily may not be the child’s real mom but the two had bonded tightly. They were as close as any blood mother and daughter. You could see the love Emily had for the little girl. Then again, Shelby was very easy to love.
“Where is that little imp?”
“She’s with daddy out checking the horses they are going to herd up to the summer pastures soon.” Emily stopped in front of the little girls room and motioned for Cheri to step inside. “She loves riding with her daddy.”
Cheri gasped as she entered a forest room with a tree bed nestled in the corner. Deer poked their noses from behind trees. Cute little squirrels sat in the trees and even cuter bunnies sat around the base of the trees. “Oh. My. God,” Cheri exclaimed as she turned in circles to see everything. “I love that bed.”
“Shel and Bryant built that,” Emily exclaimed. “Buddy did the walls and the ceiling. He is a fantastic painter.”
“We’re talking about Buddy, the truck driver, who can shoot a spider from a hundred yards?”
“He missed his calling didn’t he?”
“Wow, he sure did,” Cheri did one more circle before following Emily to the kitchen.
“How about some tea?” Emily asked as she filled the tea kettle. She stopped drinking coffee as soon as she found out she was pregnant. “I always seem thirsty anymore.”
“I can understand why,” Cheri laughed. She took the kettle from Emily. “Sit, I will get the tea. I swear you are getting bigger everyday.”
“That’s not a nice thing to say to a woman,” Emily laughed. She eased her body into a chair. “I hate it when you’re right though.”
Cheri put the water on, found some crackers and cheese, and a plate of chopped veggies. “I see Rosa is making sure you have healthy snacks around.”
“She hides all the good stuff,” Emily pouted. “I can’t find a sugar cookie to save my soul.”
“Good for her,” Cheri laughed as she set the table. “Where does she go on her days off anyway? I didn’t think that women ever left the ranch.”
