I see this more and more very day, and so-called college grads erroneously believe their "schooling" makes them superior - just ask them!  The longer you stay in public school, (including college) the stupider you get
Money can't provide real education any more than buy "class". I've had the privilege of being around home schooled youngsters, who graduate at 14 and 15, with an education that most colleges don't supply, AND, they know who they are, what they want to accomplish, and believe they have the tools to succeed. They have high self-esteem and are drug-free. Socially, they are also FAR superior than any public school kids with whom I've interacted. Nice kids, yes, smart? not so much...
Our govt. funded schools teach kids to obey the rules, do what you are told, don't think for yourself, grow up, get your socialistic education, go to work for someone else so you can work as a slave for the govt. by way of paying your taxes, and let the govt. tell you what to believe and what you can and cannot do.
Just look at the past decade.
Dumbest Generation Getting Dumber
In 2006, U.S. students ranked 25th of 30 advanced nations in math and 24th in science. McKinsey & Company, in releasing its report "The Economic Impact of the Achievement Gap in America's Schools" (April 2009) said, "Several other facts paint a worrisome picture. First, the longer American children are in school, the worse they perform compared to their international peers.
In recent cross-country comparisons of fourth grade reading, math, and science, US students scored in the top quarter or top half of advanced nations. By age 15 these rankings drop to the bottom half.
In other words, American students are farthest behind just as they are about to enter higher education or the workforce." That's a sobering thought. The longer kids are in school and the more money we spend on them, the further behind they get.

I hope so anyway!
I do Agree that alot needs to be taught in the Home before any Child will go forward in thir Education and Manners.
For me, They both go hand in hand. We raised our Children this way, and just know it was the Right thing to do.
The public schools are based on an "anti education" model which is damaging on many levels. The information you provide is an excellent reason to change the model of education we use but for some reason the idea of doing that isn't even under consideration. Our bad education system has made us too dumb to fix it.
I have always felt that home schooling would be the better choice, especially with all the crazies coming out of the woodwork and killing innocent children...
Col. - the reason Obama got the # of states wrong is because he was speaking of the number of Muslim countries - I remember the articles.
She wasn't so sure about the arrangement because we had 22 kids from 6 to 12 in the classroom. But she said they learned more in 6 weeks than her public school kids did in a year. And she was impressed that the older ones helped the younger ones, which reinforced their own learning.
Now, that's just their required "schooling" but the education was ongong - all day and all year round.
I have great respect for parents who homeschool. Their children do have more time to learn and more time for other activities.
teaching kids how to put condoms on cucumbers.......
With all the innovations and advances in technology, education, mainly in public schools, is lagging far behind.
Start by going to all local meetings, and voicing your opinions. People will learn you are the go-to person for answers.
Strt locally to improve the govt., and then leave like-minded people in your place as you move on and on...
Providing for our children includes education.
While I feel certain that all parents can and should make up the difference, cutting administration costs or eliminating field trips might take care of that shortfall. Public school spending is notoriously wasteful, so now is the time to learn to tighten the belt without cheating the students. Teachers are aware that there is a long line of qualified candidates who would like to take their jobs.
I really believe we would have better schools if we had a voucher system. With parents choosing from a variety of schools, the public schools would have to pull up their socks and compete by raising quality and pleasing the parents. With vouchers, parents would be free to choose the best schools for their children. Why would anyone not want that?
My friends, whose children attended public schools, stopped voting for millages because the students never benefit from a millage increase. The funds are all for administration and teachers.

I've always agreed with what this article has to say about our education system, and I grew up attending my public education system as seldomly as I could manage. When I skipped school, I was not out partying, and running around. I was at home reading.
This is a great article, Linda. Appeals to the Libertarian within me. Thanks!
