The beauty queen Rachel Christie has given up her title of Miss England after a run in with the law. Christie was recently arrested on suspicion of being involved in a night club assault. Allegedly Christie punched a fellow pageant contestant, Sara Beverly Jones - Miss Manchester, in the face during an argument about a man that they have both dated.
After the arrest Christie thought it best to give up her title on her own so that she could focus on clearing her name. My guess is that the pageant officials may have stripped her of her crown if she had not done so willingly. The pageant organizers did however respond with this statement,
“Due to the media attention following the allegations against her, Rachel Christie has now decided to withdraw from the Miss World competition and relinquish her Miss England crown. Rachel will concentrate on clearing her name and focus on training for the 2012 Olympics until this case is resolved.”
Christie is an athlete and, as mentioned above, hoping to compete in the Olympics. She was also the first African American woman crowned Miss England.
It sounds like she had a lot going for her, so I hope for her sake that she gets her life squared away. However, it does seem like more of these pageant girls have made the news of late for various reasons. Do you feel these women are shirking their responsibility to young girls as role models?
