The Krugerrand gold coins were first minted in South Africa in 1967. The krugerrand gold coins were minted for gold ownership but they were also used as the currency. Because it was a currency it was minted in a durable alloy. You can tell by looking at the coin, it is a darker shade of yellow compared to the other gold bullion coins.
The krugerrand gold coins do not have a face value unlike other gold bullion coins. The value is taken from the current gold price on the market. To measure the value in this way was totally unique to the krugerrand bullion coin. Also up until this point no other gold coin had measured exactly one ounce of fine gold.
In many Western countries the krugerrand was illegal to import throughout the 1970's-80's but the law changed in 1994 and people around the world began to take ownership of the coin. By 1980 the krugerrand coin owned 90% of the gold coin market. Following the popularity of the krugerrand other countries began also to mint there own bullion coins. American Gold Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, Britannia Coin, Australian Nugget.
It was the president of the old South African Republic Paul Krugman that bears the face on one side of the coin. The other side of the coin is a picture of a springbok, one of the national symbols of South Africa.
The exciting point about the precious metals sector today is that a complete novice can now invest and make better returns than most professionals. The precious Metal sector and commodities due to their scarcity offer the next huge investment opportunity.
Every day more and more currency is flooding the economy and with interest levels with no place to go there is going to be a huge problem, one being inflation which will be reaching new record levels. Only last week of writing this article it was released that the UK have just created another £25.5 Billion to bailout the Royal Bank of Scotland. That is a new bank bailout record of 45.5 Billion pounds and no one is sure how long it will last until more money has to be 'printed'.
I think new investors should not just take any one persons advice when investing, whether it be in real estate or with Krugerrand Gold Coins. Look at what other countries are doing and there is only one real opportunity today.
