I've mentioned that I'm running a half-marathon in February, right? I don't want to assume you've read my every post to date, and yet I don't want to say the same things over and over, so real quick-like for anyone new: I am running a half-marathon in February.
It is kind of a big deal, this half-marathon. Actually, the big deal is the training leading up to the race, because I have a lot of work to do and all of it is very necessary. I have no background in running anything longer than a 5K, so every week between now and February 28 I need to get out there and train.
My training officially began last week, and I've run a total of 13 miles since then. (Hey! That's the length of the race! If only I could take a week to complete it, I'd be GOLDEN.) The training is going well so far—you know, in the whole WEEK I've been doing it—and I'm feeling good about the possibility that I'll really and truly be able to stick this out.
Here's my problem: in a couple weeks, my husband has a hunting trip in Oregon. He'll be gone for a long weekend, maybe a Friday through Tuesday.
When he's out of town and I'm on my own with the kids, I don't exercise. I don't eat well. I let the myriad challenges of single parenthood pile up and I reward myself with food because oh my god this weekend is never going to end EVER, etc.
I know this about myself and if I were on my own more often I'd probably try and deal with it, but since it's fairly rare, I allow myself the space to be a Doritos-eating sloth for a few days on those occasions.
This time around, though, I'm worried about my training routine. I'm a concerned about missing a couple runs, and more importantly, getting out of the mindset of training. There's always the option of traveling with my husband and staying at his parents' house while he's hunting, but that means packing up the kids and driving 300 miles just so I can run in someone else's neighborhood.
How do you deal with scheduled setbacks? Should I view this as a chance to rest, or should I book a babysitter so I can get in the runs anyway? Any tips for staying focused and motivated on a training goal even during an "off" week?

I've been reading you for a while now and it seems as though I'm on a similar exercise journey as you. I don't think I'm mentally ready for a 1/2 marathon yet but I'm dying for you to finish it and don't want you to sabotage your plans!
Get a babysitter - the best thing you can do while your husband is out of town is take care of yourself and that includes allowing time for a few runs.
