I have been in the states nearly 5 years and there are a lot of things different from the UK as you can imagine. Amercians always look at me like I am a crazy man when I call teh day after christmas day Boxing day.
Black friday is something that fascinates me, I mean every year we get enough leaflets and offers through the post that we could wallpaper our house with them (hmm wonder if my wife would allow me to do that) and yet we are buying less and less every year.
I get that thanksgiving is a big holiday, it is a bit like a long weekend with the Harvest festival thrown in. I don't get how come giving thanks includes giving over your first born to get a big screen TV.
My wife just said that since her first born is now 18 and hasn't cleaned his room in weeks she may well offer him to KMart in exchange for a TV..
Anyway I find that the day after thanksgiving sales keep me entertained all weekend, not buying anything but watching the faces people make when they are asked why they bought something.
So often they aren't really sure why they want it or who they will give it to. So if you are planning to go shopping crazy that is great, but make sure you know what you are buying and why.

Americans have more stuff than ever before--and are far less happy.
