Not an easy, simplistic answer to this question, but I know we have a lot of enlightened souls on Gather and I think we will come up with a lot of solutions. The problems are many. On a grand scale we could list them as war, famine, poverty, disease, greed, and prejudice. We hear from religious leaders that if everyone just belongs to their particular faith, problems would be no more. We hear from churches and charitable organizations that if we contribute to their cause, those in need will no longer want for food, medical aid, or housing. Is compassion something that has to be taught or is it innate? If a baby is taught all of those higher values would we be on our way toward a better world? Are children, these days not being taught what is the right thing?
I agree with Amma, a spiritual leader from India, that problems exist due to a lack of love in the world. Amma means mother and this is the name her followers have given her. Dr. Leo Buscaglia touched on this in the 1980's with his series on public television. He was known as "the love doctor." The hippy movement tried to bring awareness in the 1960's and 70's with their mantra, "peace and love." And of course from The Bible, "Love thy neighbor as thyself."
So if you had the magic wand, what would you be doing?

You are correct. In fact gold is so valuable, not because it is so useful (iron is more useful) but because it has been used so often as money.
Your point about the chickens is well taken. Obviously any object used as money will be "the root of all evil." Therefore, we should adopt a money which is not a physical object (living or not) and which does not represent a physical object. Up until now every money has been such a physical object money. Up until now, money has caused or permitted war, theft, government oppression, poverty, unemployment, inflation/deflation, organized crime, taxes, and bad TV commercials. It contributes to pollution, discrimination, and divorce. It costs us about 25% of our gross production of goods and services each year. Yes, we spend a quarter of our production servicing money in one way or another. There really is a better way than this money (which isn't saying that much given how terrible our money is).
we imply goodness and virtue on the rich, whatever kind of currency they have ... when that is often no warranted. we do business with the brightly colored faces of corporations that paint us a nice colored facade of what they think we want them to be, when in the background are people we would never choose to do business with or relate to in a million years if we had a choice.
it is information we lack, and money in whatever incarnation does not have any information about itself inherent in it, gold, paper, chickens or whatever.
Please visit www.nopom.info to see how we can do it.
Clifford has correctly identified the problem, correcting that problem will do the rest.
It's pretty interesting to see the answers folks give to this question.
that is why i think everyone should be equal.
