Admittedly, I'm unconventional. I never understood why everyone thought the popular guy in high school was cute. I mean, that kinky hair, greasy skin and rounded shoulders were a real turn-off! But I digress...
I just don't understand the attraction to Facebook. I opened a personal and "writing" account there but hardly ever logon. In fact, it was only due to contined personal and professional pressure that I initiated either account.
Everyone is playing Mob Wars, Farmville, Farm Town and whatever else on Facebook. Why? There are no points to be earned or money to be made. The interaction is unfulfilling to me. Maybe as a writer I just prefer to post rather than play...
But why go to a social networking site with no points when you can Gather? Despite the many changes, Gather remains my favorite place to hang out. I make new friends (the old ones get tiresome, especially when I see they're playing Mob Wars for several hours each day) and earn a little extra cash.
Even on its worst day, Gather is highly interactive. You get responses to your posts and don't have to engage in silly antics to socialize. Maybe I just don't get it...sorta like that weird popular dude in high school...what am I missing???

I reject all APPS~ games anything that smacks of the possibility of wasting my time as I get caught up in feeding fish and raking leaves~
On facebook, I've reconnected with people I already know, or once knew back in a different lifetime. Facebook is more immediate, with its status updates and wall posts the focus of attention. Interaction is short and sweet, with conversations following in comment threads. I haven't used the "notes" feature much, but that is closer to what gather calls "posts." The potential audience (readers) is much, much bigger on facebook, and gather is more like a gated community with small groups built around interests.
With facebook, announcements, events and fan pages are much more likely to "go viral" because it's easier to share content quickly.
I submit my content to various "groups" on gather, but I don't think many users actually go to groups for their info.
That's my two cents' worth anyhow.

But at least I keep in touch with family and friends....
I do play games on there, even though I know it's a waste of time. I like games, though, and always have. I don't play for long on facebook or anything, but it is fun to do for a few minutes at a time.
Gather is great, but lately, I am not getting very much in terms of points so I'm here pretty much for the same reason why I'm on Facebook, to interact with people.
i don't get the attraction of facebook!!
Myspace and yahoo was ok until the kids took it over.
If I wanted to babysit kids I have my own lol!!
Popular kids at school, again who knows?? Follow the leader mentality??

However, she indicated she would reject my friendship or my stepfather's, so there must be more girls only stuff.
I don't have enough time for Gather some days so wouldn't be able to be active anywhere else.

I do go on Facebook every day too, but it's mostly just to keep up with family and friends. I don't really have family on Gather and I like it that way. There is one game on Facebook that I am hopelessly addicted too................Pathwords. It's a blast.
I have connected with some old classmates and keep up with a few good friends from Gather (I won't mention any names, but it was my Gather friends that encouraged me to join!) Anyway, I prefer Gather over any other social site!
So, to boil it all down, Gather is for online friends/acquaintances, Facebook is for offline friends/acquaintances.

I use it because it lets me reconnect with OLD FRIENDS and people from my past. Gather lets me connect with new people who share the same interests.
I too find it... uninspiring. I log in about once a week for five minutes, look at the status updates everyone's put in for the last day, make a few snarky comments, and then leave again. I'm on Gather less and less but I'm sure not replacing it with Facebook.
